When applying for a payment gateway, follow the suggestions below to streamline your application:
Your company’s registered name and address should be displayed on the website. This will give customers confidence that they know who they are dealing with. Put the information within the footer of the homepage, and include it in your terms and conditions. It should also appear on your final payment page (the last stage of the checkout before the customer pays).
Customer Support contact details should be displayed prominently, including a customer services telephone number and email address. These should be on the home, contact us and T&Cs page. This information gives customers faith in the website and confidence to buy, as they know they can contact you at any time.
Your website should include full and comprehensive Terms and Conditions. This protects both the business and the customer.
The Refund Policy should explain the company’s policy toward refunds. As always, clear and concise information is key here.
Depending on what you’re selling, a disclaimer will indemnify your business and make sure you’re not crossing any regulatory lines. For example, if you sell health supplements in the UK, MHRA requires you to inform customers that none of your products are intended to cure, prevent or treat any illness.
Products and Services
This is where you get to show off what you do best! Keep your wording simple, but make sure it’s also informative. High-resolution photos will speak of a high-class business. They also inform the bank that you’re doing exactly what you say you are. Ingredients, detailed product information and manufacturing processes in the description will add weight to the value of the product.
Pricing should be transparent and in the relevant currencies.
There are a few key things the shipping options need to cover: price, methods and delivery time, and any restrictions, such as an area or country that is not covered.
The website should be secured with TLS level of security. This protects the customer from malicious activity while placing their order. It is an absolute necessity for e-commerce merchants.
After the customer has completed all the payment information including their card details, you will need to present a final T&Cs tick-box, which must be ticked before the customer clicks ‘Pay Now.’
The available payment methods (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, etc) must be displayed in high-res, colour logos on the footer of the site and on the checkout pages.
The descriptor is very important. This is the name that will appear on your customer’s statements. If the descriptor is something different than your website or trading style, ensure you notify the customer during the checkout process: “Your purchase will appear as ‘… Zion Payments…’ on your billing statement.” This will minimise potential friendly fraud, whereby customers see a card statement at some period after the purchase with a descriptor they don’t recognise and approach their bank to chargeback.
If you offer a subscription service (also known as recurring transactions), layout how that works, when payments are taken, amounts and so on. Subscriptions are a brilliant way for your business to increase customer retention and build brand loyalty, but they are also a fast-track to high chargebacks ratios and lots of headaches if not done correctly. Customer loyalty – good! 😊 Headaches – bad! ☹
